Signs Something May Be Wrong With Your Dental Implants

Posted on: 26 May 2023

If you have dental implants, you know you have one of the best investments in your oral health in your mouth. Dental implants are greatly beneficial in allowing you to chew, speak, and do other things normally that you might not otherwise be able to do with dentures or no oral health replacements.

While dental implants are considered a pretty much permanent fixture in your mouth, they may need to be replaced at times or checked out by your dentist. You want to protect the investment in your smile, and checking for signs something may be wrong with your dental implants is just one way to do this. Here are some of those signs.

Your gums are sore around your implants

Dental implants go under the gum line and into your jawbone. They should be sore initially after you get your dental implants put in but should not be sore after that. If you do experience soreness or discomfort, you may have an infection in your gums or jawbone, or you may have a problem with your implant itself.

Call your dentist right away if you have pain in your entire jaw or your pain is worsening, you have a fever, you see that your gums are very inflamed, or your gums are bleeding. Your dentist may recommend you seek emergency care in a hospital to treat an infection or other issues but will most often be able to treat you in their clinic.

Your dental implants are loose or chipped

If your dental implants feel loose or chipped, then see your dentist right away. There is a chance that they may be damaged, and the sooner you get your dentist involved, the better. Your dental implants are important to you and a very expensive investment that should last.

Speak to your dentist if you have chipped your dental implant or been in contact with something hard with your mouth or jaw. Even if your dental implants and other natural teeth feel fine, you may have some unseen issues that may only show up on an X-ray. Your dentist will allow you to have peace of mind and will repair your smile as they deem necessary.

With the right care, your dental implants should last nearly indefinitely. You may even have them outlast any other dental solution you've had. Reach out to your dentist for more information about dental implants
